Rail safety for secondary school students

A new collaboration between KiwiRail, TrackSAFE NZ and Kaitiaki o Ara Students against Dangerous Driving

Empowering Young People to Make Rail Safety a Priority

A new collaboration between KiwiRail, TrackSAFE NZ and Kaitiaki o Ara Students against Dangerous Driving puts rangitahi/young people at the centre of rail safety education.

By encouraging peer-to-peer learning, students are empowered to share important rail safety messages with their friends, schools, and wider communities.

Any secondary school students can use these resources, whether they are a member of SADD or not.

What’s Available?

A suite of brand-new resources is now available to help students lead the way in promoting safer behaviour around trains and railway tracks. These include:

  • Stats and facts about New Zealand’s rail network and the risks people face around level crossings and tracks.
  • Ideas for action – practical ways to raise rail safety awareness in your school or local area.
  • Interactive ‘Pick a Pathway’ games that let students make decisions in real-life scenarios involving trains, to help build understanding and safer habits.

All the materials are available to download now from the SADD website.

Why This Matters

There are over 1,300 level crossings across New Zealand, and too many incidents still happen because people take shortcuts or don’t realise the risks. This initiative helps students take the lead in looking out for themselves and each other.

Let’s work together to make sure everyone gets home safely.

Stay off. Stay clear. Stay safe.
